This paper presents the basic concepts and foundation theories of engineering thermodynamics, providing students with basic theoretical tools to understand, develop and improve energy conversion and production systems and technologies. The aims are that students should gain a sound understanding of fundamental concepts of systems, processes and thermodynamic properties, as well as the first and second laws of thermodynamics. This paper is fundamental for further work in the areas of process engineering, sustainable energy, energy production and conversion and energy efficiency.
