This is an introductory course about the fundamentals of photonics and their impacts
on our daily
life. Photonics contributes to the fundamental platform for nanotechnology, green ene rgy, home
entertainment, data storage, sensing, imaging, biomedical healt hcare, and modern optical
communications. The course aims to introduce to the prospec tive students the basic knowledge and
essence of photonic technologies, and how these technologies are applied to and influence our daily
life.
This course is
intended for students with various engineering backgrounds (e.g. electrical, electronic,
chemica l, biological, mechanical, civil, aerospace, etc) to learn the impact of photonics in fields
rangi ng from nanotechnology to communications in a fundamental leve l rather than a mathematical
based formulated course. A list of relevant formulae will be provid ed in the final examination paper.
