Course Description:

Coastal Disaster Modelling (Credit 3) is the senior-level course for undergraduate students in civil, environmental and architectural engineering disciplines. In this course, we will understand the various natural disasters that may occur in the coastal environment and learn how to mitigate their impacts. To this end, basic concepts and basic principles of tides and waves, which are important for the occurrence and propagation of coastal disasters, are acquired, and disaster prediction techniques are learned through the modeling practice of coastal disaster cases such as storm flooding, tsunami, and
oil spill, chemical release, coastal erosion.

  • Understand fundamentals of wave mechanics applied to coastal disaster study
  • Learn the processes of coastal wave transformation, and its effects on the nearshore environment
  • Know how coastal disasters are generated and propagate over the coastal area
  • Learn how to measure damaging level (e.g., surge height) due to coastal disaster
  • Develop a profession required in the prediction of coastal disasters (tsunamis/storm surges) based on numerical modelling technique.
