Course Description:
Biopharmaceutical engineering overview (types and structure of products, drug discovery, delivery and commercialisation); Biotechnology and biopharmaceuticals (systems used to produce recombinant proteins, e.g., bacteria, yeasts, mammalian cells, animals transgenic systems and Industrial application of recombinant technology to produce proteins as therapeutic agents); Overview of biopharmaceutical production (protein sources, process design, scale-up, downstream processing, purification strategy, and chromatographic methods; Upstream production process (primary production, fermentation, genetic engineering, scale up considerations); Downstream production process (recovery, purification, formulation and filling); Facility design and operation (design and operation, sterile manufacturing facilities, aseptic processing, sterilisation and disinfection (thermal and non-thermal), area classification, ventilation, air conditioning and HEPA filtration, water, surface finishes, pressure, barrier isolation technology, personnel, clothing, non-aseptic areas of the biopharmaceutical plant.
